ABOUT THE COURSE

“The Way of the Buddha—Meditation and Insight” is a year-long foundation-level course in 3 semesters (Winter 2020, Spring 2020, Fall 2020). Join us for Semester 1, Discovering Reality: Neurosis, Sanity, and the Way of Meditation,” an exploration of the path of mindfulness-awareness meditation and insight as originally described by the Buddha and skillfully transmitted to the West by one of the great Tibetan masters of our time. We will cover such topics as the life of the Buddha, the birth of confusion and suffering, meditation, and the path back to sanity, focusing on the techniques and stages of meditation and bringing meditation into our daily lives. Readings from the works of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and others.

  • 20 minutes of group sitting meditation followed by 10 minutes of walking meditation followed by 20 minutes of group sitting meditation and then a short break

  • Lecture with discussion starts at 7:30 pm and ends by 9:00 pm

  • Meditation instruction is offered in a separate room at the same time as meditation practice for anyone who wishes it.

  • Instructors are available for 30 minutes private discussion before or after class, by appointment.

  • Classes conclude with tea, snacks and conversation.  

  • Participants may attend individual classes on a “drop-in” basis.

  • All classes will be recorded and available on our website for those not able to attend any class in person.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

A close student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, course instructor John Baker has been a practitioner and teacher of Buddhism for 49 years. He co-founded the Karma Dzong Meditation Center in Boulder, Colorado in 1970, serving for five years as its first co-director. He also co-founded Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, serving as its first CEO and heading the Buddhist Studies Department there for its first five years. He co-edited Trungpa’s Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism and The Myth of Freedom and is the author of various articles. After 23 years in private business, he retired, continuing to teach Buddhist thought and meditation and is today co-founder and a principal teacher at the Westchester Buddhist Center in Irvington and the New York Buddha Dharma Center in Manhattan.   • Aligned Center is situated right above the Red Hat restaurant, next to WBC's usual Irvington location at the Eileen Fisher Headquarters

  • Park in the large lot in front of MP Taverna and walk into courtyard to the right of the Eileen Fisher Lab

  • Go straight ahead to the "Foundry" entrance

  • The office is on the second floor right at the top of the stairs


* “Foundation” courses are offered for those just beginning to study with WBC, and offer an accessible broad overview. They establish a foundation for further study at the Intermediate level.
